GENDER VIOLENCE PROJECT

In our country, the contexts that surround young people are often marked by violence, which is widely recognized as a threat to the integral development of adolescents. The situations of vulnerability further complicate the reality of these youth.

Violence is already installed as a socio-cultural phenomenon, not only in our country but throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, where it represents one of the principal causes of death in the population between 10 and 19 years of age (29% of homicide victims in the South America are adolescents).

It is not limited to physical trauma or sexual assault, but also includes emotional and verbal abuse, threats, and other types of psychological abuse (manipulation, blackmail, abandonment, etc.).

Some Facts:

  • 20% of cases of violence occur between 19 and 25 year olds
  • 50% of violent couples had violent dating

At our organization, we felt that this social problem was an activity that we had to address. Under this premise, we began to develop the project Training of Preventive Promoters of Gender Violence with an emphasis on Adolescent Dating.”

The project, which we will begin to execute in March of 2018, aims to develop a preventive approach with men and women who work as promoters/neighborhood referents before situations of gender violence.

The initiative seeks to consider the socio-cultural patters influencing the development of gender-based violence between married couples and adolescents, addressing them from three areas of intervention:

  • Sensitization (from the general community and adolescents in particular)
  • Education (workshops for adolescents, family, and social referents)
  • Guidance and Articulation

Based on this work, for the first time, we will hold training activities aimed at people interested in detecting these behaviors in areas of community intervention to later implement workshops in neighborhoods with adolescents, families, and social referents through the Popular Education methodology, addressing the contents taught in the training with the promoters.

Let us remember that gender violence responds to a series of practices that are developed in the field of interpersonal relations and which can be manifested through physical, psychological, economic, patrimonial, and symbolic violence, especially in the sectors where the machismo culture has been accepted as a social norm for the use of violence to resolve conflicts.
